The best things to do in Jorhat, Assam
Quick answer
Jorhat is Upper Assam's tea and culture capital. In two or three days you can:
- walk a tea garden and visit Tocklai, one of the world's oldest tea research stations
- see Ahom history at Raja Maidam and Lachit Borphukan's Maidam
- look for hoolock gibbons at Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary
- take the ferry from Nimati Ghat to Majuli, the river island of satras
- eat a proper Assamese thali, from khar to tenga

Most travellers pass through Jorhat on the way to Majuli or Kaziranga. That's a mistake. The city was the last capital of the Ahom kingdom, from 1794. It's ringed by tea estates and has a calm, green, unhurried feel that bigger Assamese cities have lost. Here's what's worth your time.
Tea, the reason Jorhat is on the map
- Walk a tea estate. The Jorhat district newsletter counts around 135 tea estates in the district. Gardens like Cinnamara, one of Assam's earliest Assamese-owned estates, sit within easy driving distance of town. See our tea garden guide for how to arrange a visit.
- Tocklai Tea Research Institute. Founded in 1911, Tocklai is often called the oldest and largest tea research station in the world. Parts of the campus are open to visitors; research areas may be restricted.
- Drink it properly. Ask for a strong, malty CTC milk tea at a roadside stall, then try an orthodox black tea without milk. You'll taste why Assam tea is famous.
Ahom history and heritage
- Raja Maidam, the burial mound of Ahom king Purandar Singha, is in the park in the city centre, a short walk from J.B. Road.
- Lachit Borphukan's Maidam at Hoolungapara honours the Ahom general who defeated the Mughals at Saraighat in 1671.
- Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar, about 15 km east of town, is a prayer hall linked to the Vaishnavite saint Madhavdeva. Its lamp is said to have burned since the 16th century.
- Sivasagar, the earlier Ahom capital, is about an hour away. See our Sivasagar day trip.
Nature and wildlife
- Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, about 19 km from Jorhat, protects India's only ape, the hoolock gibbon. Go early in the morning, when the gibbons call.
- Kaziranga National Park is about 88 km west, close enough for a safari day trip.
Majuli, the river island
Majuli is reached by ferry from Nimati Ghat, about 14 km from town. It's known for its satras (Vaishnavite monasteries), mask-making at Samaguri and Mishing villages. Read how to reach Majuli before you go. The last ferry back matters.
Food and city life
- Eat a full Assamese meal: khar, pitika, masor tenga, duck or pork with bamboo shoot.
- Watch a match or a race day at the Jorhat Gymkhana Club (1876), often described as Asia's oldest golf course.
- Shop for muga and pat silk, gamosas and bell-metal at the local markets.
- Time your visit with Bihu: Bhogali in January, the harvest feast, or Rongali in April, the Assamese new year.
Best time to visit
October to March is the most comfortable, with clear days and cool evenings. April and May are hot and humid. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain, and Majuli ferries can be disrupted.
