How to reach Majuli from Jorhat
Quick answer
Drive about 14 km from Jorhat to Nimati Ghat, then take the government (IWT) ferry across the Brahmaputra to Kamalabari Ghat on Majuli.
- The crossing takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. Passenger fares are low, typically tens of rupees.
- First boats usually leave around 7 to 8:30 am. The last boats from Nimati usually leave around 3 to 3:30 pm.
- Timings change with season and river level, so confirm the day before.
- The Jorhat–Majuli bridge is under construction and not yet open.

Majuli is one of the largest river islands in the world, and getting there is half the experience: a wide, slow crossing of the Brahmaputra with sandbanks and river birds. Here's how to do it smoothly from Jorhat.
Step 1: Jorhat to Nimati Ghat
Nimati (also spelled Neamati) Ghat is about 14 km north of Jorhat town, roughly 30 minutes by car. Hire a cab or arrange a drop. Shared transport runs, but a private car is simpler for an early boat. Aim to reach the ghat 30 to 45 minutes before your ferry.
Step 2: The ferry to Kamalabari
- Operator: Assam Inland Water Transport (IWT) runs the main ferries, and private boats also cross.
- Duration: about 1 to 1.5 hours, longer in the dry season when channels shift.
- Tickets: bought at the ghat counter. Passenger fares are modest; vehicles cost more.
- Cars and bikes: larger ferries take vehicles, but space is limited. Arrive early if you're taking a car.
- Timings: typically a few boats a day, the first around 7 to 8:30 am. The last boat back from Kamalabari is usually around 2:30 to 3 pm. Missing it means an unplanned night on the island.
Step 3: Getting around Majuli
From Kamalabari Ghat, hire a car or auto to Garamur and Kamalabari, the main hubs, and the satras. Many visitors hire one vehicle for the whole day. Bicycles and scooters are available in Garamur for overnight visitors.
What about the bridge?
A road bridge of roughly 6.8 km between Jorhat and Majuli is being built. Work stalled in 2024 and resumed under a new contractor in early 2026, with completion targeted within about two years. For now, the ferry is the way in.
Tips
- Avoid planning Majuli on a day of heavy rain. Monsoon flooding (June to September) can suspend ferries.
- Carry water, snacks and cash. Facilities at the ghats are basic.
- Read day trip or overnight? to decide how long to stay.
